“GIVE YOUR BOOKS A JOB” WORKSHEET
Weekly Reading Plan for Balanced, Joyful Read-Alouds
🎯 THE CONCEPT
Instead of trying to make every book do everything, give each book ONE clear “job” for the week. This keeps reading simple, focused, and joyful!
The Three Main Jobs:
- Phonics & Independence Practice (Lessons 4.1 + 4.3)
- Comprehension Building (Lesson 4.2)
- Pure Joy & Engagement (Lesson 4.4)

💡 QUICK PLANNING GUIDE
Not sure which job to give which book? Use this guide:
📘 PHONICS & INDEPENDENCE FOCUS
Best for these books:
- Early readers at their level
- Familiar favorites they’re ready to read themselves
- Decodable books
- Books with 2-3 challenging words per page
Book examples:
- BOB Books
- I Can Read Level 1-2
- Frog and Toad
- Elephant & Piggie
Your role: Patient coach, light scaffolder, process praiser
📗 COMPREHENSION FOCUS
Best for these books:
- New library books
- Rich, complex stories
- Chapter books
- Books above their reading level (you read)
Book examples:
- Charlotte’s Web
- Wonder
- Where the Wild Things Are
- The Snowy Day
Your role: Model thinker, wonder-question asker, story bridge builder
📙 JOY & ENGAGEMENT FOCUS
Best for these books:
- Silly, fun books
- Poetry and rhyming
- Interactive books
- Favorites they want repeated
- Books that lend themselves to voices/movement
Book examples:
- We’re Going on a Bear Hunt
- Any Dr. Seuss
- Press Here
- Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!
Your role: Playmate, laughter maker, snuggle provider
⚖️ BALANCED WEEK TEMPLATE
Aim for variety across the week!
Example balanced week:
- Mon: Joy focus (start week light!)
- Tue: Phonics focus (they read)
- Wed: Comprehension focus (you read, discuss)
- Thu: Joy focus (silly book)
- Fri: Phonics or Comprehension (their choice!)
You don’t need to do each focus every week, but variety helps!
🚨 WHEN TO PIVOT YOUR PLAN
Planned phonics, but child is:
- Wiggly → Switch to movement/joy
- Exhausted → Switch to pure listening/snuggle
- Frustrated → Drop to easier book or pure joy
Planned comprehension, but child is:
- Wanting to read → Let them! (Independence instead)
- Rushing you → Drop questions, just read
- Not engaged → Switch to sillier book with joy focus
Planned joy, but child is:
- Asking deep questions → Honor their comprehension!
- Wanting to practice reading → Let them read!
REMEMBER: The plan serves the child, not vice versa!
✅ QUICK CHECK
After each reading session:
☐ Did I stick to ONE focus?
☐ Was 80%+ of time connection and joy?
☐ Did I follow my child’s lead when they signaled?
☐ Did the story flow (not interrupted constantly)?
☐ Did we both enjoy it?
If you checked 3+: SUCCESS!
🌟 REMEMBER
The goal isn’t to:
- Do all three focuses every night
- Make every book “educational”
- Follow your plan rigidly
- Be the perfect reading teacher
The goal IS to:
- Have ONE clear, simple focus per book
- Protect joy and connection (80%!)
- Follow your child’s natural engagement
- Build lifelong love of reading
Some nights, your plan will be: 100% snuggle, 0% teaching.
And that’s PERFECT. 🌸
