Activity 2.3: Where to Find “Mirror & Window” Books
Finding “Mirror & Window” Books
Saying “find diverse books” is easy, but how do you do it? Here are three places to start:
- Ask Your Librarian (Your #1 Resource!)
Don’t just browse — talk to the children’s librarian and ask for what you need. They love helping families find meaningful stories.
Sample questions:
- “Can you help me find picture books about a two-mom family?”
- “My daughter uses a wheelchair — do you have books where the main character does too?”
- “I’d love to find some #OwnVoices books by Indigenous authors.”
- Look for Book Awards
Librarians use these seals to identify high-quality, authentic stories:
- 🏅 Coretta Scott King Award: African American authors and illustrators.
- 🏅 Pura Belpré Award: Latinx/Latino/Latine writers and illustrators.
- 🏅 Schneider Family Book Award: Books that reflect the disability experience.
- 🏅 Stonewall Book Award: Books celebrating LGBTQIA+ stories.
- Explore Online Resources

Reflection
Does your child mostly see “mirror” stories, “window” stories, or a healthy mix of both?
How might you add a few books that expand their world — or reflect it back to them more clearly?
Practice Moment
This week, visit your local library or bookstore. Choose one “mirror” and one “window” book. During reading, talk about how the story feels familiar or different — and what that teaches you both.
