Activity 3.2 – Distraction Troubleshooting Guide
Because even the most magical story time can go off track.
Distraction happens — it’s part of being a kid (and sometimes, part of being human). Instead of fighting it, this guide helps you notice what’s pulling your child’s attention and gently steer the moment back toward connection. The goal isn’t perfect focus; it’s learning to respond calmly and creatively when attention drifts.
How to Use This Guide
-
Keep it nearby during reading time.
Think of it as your quick-reference card when things start to derail. -
Identify the “problem.”
Pause for a breath and look at what’s happening — is it the prop, the toy, or simply too much excitement? -
Choose a matching “fix.”
Try one of the simple strategies below to reset the moment without frustration. -
Notice what works.
Each child’s attention patterns are different. Observe, adjust, and celebrate small improvements. -
End with calm connection.
Once focus returns, affirm your child’s effort: “You found your focus again — great listening!”
