Activity 2.2: Finding the “Goldilocks Zone”
How to Find the “Goldilocks Zone”: The 5-Finger Rule
Here is a simple test you can do at the library or bookstore to find a “Read-By” book that is “just right.”
-
Ask your child to open the book to any page (one with plenty of words).
-
Have them read the page out loud.
-
Hold up one finger for every word they don’t know or can’t figure out.

Check your hand at the end of the page:
-
0-1 Finger (Comfort): This book is great for easy, confident, and fluent practice. It’s a “comfort food” read.
-
2-3 Fingers (Stretch): This is the Goldilocks Zone! It’s challenging enough to help them grow, but not so hard that they get frustrated.
-
4-5+ Fingers (Frustration): This book is too difficult for practice right now. But it might be a perfect “Read-To” book for you to read to them!
